Silas Wamangituka: Stuttgart’s Congolese Star

VfB Stuttgart are quickly developing a reputation as one of the most promising sides in Europe. Under the leadership of technical director Sven Mislintat, the German club have a host of exciting young prospects, and 21-year-old Silas Wamangituka may be the best of the lot.

Signed from Paris FC for €8m in 2019, Silas helped Stuttgart to promotion with 13 G/A in his first year in the 2. Bundesliga. Now in the top flight, Wamangituka has been one of the league’s standouts, playing a big role in his side’s strong start to the campaign.

Naturally a forward, Wamangituka primarily spearheaded Paris FC’s frontline, but has been used in a multitude of roles since his move. Deployed across the frontline last season, he now plays as a marauding, dynamic, all-action wing-back in Stuttgart’s exciting 5-3-2 system.

Wamangituka possesses a wonderfully distinctive skillset, as his rangy frame and technical qualities makes him one of the most unique players in Europe. Dangerous in behind, smart in his movement, and instinctive in attacking areas, he’s showcased real ability in front of goal:

All of our favorite wingers usually boast one key attribute: flair. Wamangituka definitely has it, and in abundance. He frequently glides past opponents in transition, carries the ball from deep, isolates his marker, and beats them with creative and inventive pieces of skill.

However, you’ll notice he doesn’t just dribble aimlessly. When in possession, his athleticism, intelligence and technical ability gives him numerous options: he can beat his man on the dribble, play an incisive pass, combine with teammates, or win fouls in dangerous areas.

Although probably his biggest weakness, Wamangituka has begun to show real signs of improvement in his defensive abilities; both in 1v1 situations and in reading the game. He often makes timely interceptions, cutting out passes and then springing counter attacks.

Not close to being the end product, Wamangituka’s potential is scary. He’s not yet found his best position and it’s his first season at this level, but it will be so intriguing to see how he develops. One thing is for certain, however; his talent is undeniable. Remember the name.
